| Fruit Tree Pruning | ||||||||||||
Pruning is necessary for any fruit crop to be productive. Effective pruning minimizes diseases, increases size of fruit, produces better looking fruit and gives a fuller more 'Alive' tree. Pruning is a seasonal job. If a species is many years out of control I can not bring it back into control the first year. Removing too much wood in a single year can hurt a tree. If a tree is not growing and appears stagnant a good pruning job could be all it needs to spark it back into production. Nutrition is also necessary but if pruning has not been done there is no way to grasp how the tree is really doing unless a soil test is taken. Under most situations a soil test is a last resort, common sense says a tree was designed to gain all it needed naturally from the earth. It should not require extra nutrition unless heavy production or it has been stressed by environmental factors. A production orchard may increase nutrition based on years of experience of soil type and capability. Some soils are more productive and require less additional nutrition. A homeowner normally will not notice these inconsistencies in their small scale site and be able to manage growth and production with pruning. Light is the key to pruning. Every leaf needs light and the fruit needs light too for them to color and develop their vitamins and other antioxidants. Fewer limbs equals more light which in turn yields more better tasting fruit.
